On Thursday and Friday, June 5 and 6, 1879,
Commencing at 2.30 P, M.
GENTLEMEN UNABLE TO ATTEND THE SALE MAT HAVE THEIK ORDERS FAITH-
FULLY EXECUTED BY THE AUCTIONEERS OR ANY RESPECTABLE DEALER IN COINS.
Catalogued by S. K. HARZFELD,
Times Building, Philadelphia.
T. R. MARVIN & SON, NUMISMATIC PRINTERS, BOSTON.
1 879.
THE AMERICAN COIN SCALE.
INTRODUCTION.
-ooJiXc
In the interest of gentlemen who arc commencing collecting —
and their number is increasing from day to day — the following
notes will be proper.
A sale of coins is managed like the sale of any other merclian-
dise. The descriptive catalogue gives a general idea of type and
condition, and the coins themselves are on exhibition in the
morning of the days of sale, so that they may be examined by
the amateur or his agent, thus avoiding reclamations after the
sale, on account of possible mistakes in the cataloguing.
The coins are sold for cash to the highest bidder, by single
undivided lots as described in the catalogue; the bid to be at so
much a piece or the set. Collectors unable to be present at the
sale, may have their bids faithfully executed by the auctioneers,
or any respectable dealer in coins. Cash On Delivery, or according
to their special agreement, paying a slight commission on even-
tual purchases only, if any.
If the size of a piece is indicated, it is by sixteenths of an inch.
The term “ White Metal ” refers to a composition of copper, lead,
and tin, or tin and nickel, in appearance brilliant white like silver,
whicli, if carefully handled, will remain bright for years to come.
The present catalogue, prepared with usual care, but of course
not infallible, contains such a miscellaneous line of coins, medals,
cfec., that every collector will doubtless find one or another piece
which he would like to have. I shall be thankful for the smallest
bid, and again rely upon the kind assistance of my friends, brothei’
numismatists, and collectors in general.
My thanks to all for favors.
S. K. HARZFELD.
Philadelphia, Times Building, Mat 17, 1879.
